The MSc Accounting is the programme to choose if you’re looking to pursue a career in accountancy. Studying the subject within an international context, you’ll develop an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of accounting as well as the critical thinking skills so highly valued by employers.
Taught by a world-class faculty and supported by international-quality research, this intensive one-year, full-time programme will help you develop the skills needed to become a leader within the profession.
You’ll learn in a stimulating and progressive environment meaning you’ll leave the course in the ideal position to excel in whichever accounting route you choose to follow. What’s more, our trained careers advisors and broad alumni network will extend your business connections and support you up to and beyond graduation.
In Detail
The MSc Accounting covers key accounting topics including financial statements and their preparation, the practical limitations of financial reporting, and the regulatory framework and its complexities. To achieve your qualification you’ll be required to successfully complete eight core modules and a dissertation or business project or placement.
Core Modules
- Accounting Theory (MSc Accounting)
- Auditing and Assurance Services (MSc Accounting)
- Contemporary Issues in Accounting and Taxation
- Corporate Governance (MSc Accounting)
- Corporate Reporting (MSc Accounting)
- Financial Planning and Control (MSc Accounting)
- Financial Statement Analysis (MSc Accounting)
- Research Methods & Methodology in Accounting
Dissertation or Business Project
In the third term, you will complete a report of around 10,000 words. Supervised by a faculty member with relevant experience, you’ll investigate in greater detail a subject that you’ve already studied as part of your programme.
You’ll undertake this piece of work in one of the following formats:
- a standard academic dissertation (conducting a piece of primary research or a comprehensive literature review, although the School favours the former),
- a business project (a real commercial challenge sourced by you or the Business School which you investigate and write up) or
- a placement (sourced by you and supported by the Business School, in which you carry out research for the organisation as part of your placement or internship).
This is an opportunity for you to develop your business insight and present your analysis and ideas in a scholarly and professional manner. It should also show your ability to combine critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the opinions of others.
International Opportunities
We’re proud of our strong international connections. Helping you get an inside perspective on global business is a key part of the programme. That’s why we offer a range of opportunities to help you immerse yourself in a country’s business and academic environment, make new contacts and stand out in a competitive jobs market. These include:
- Writing your dissertation at one of our international partner universities (limited funding may be available if you do this with one of our European partners)
- Attending summer schools given by our international partners
- Taking the optional International Study Tour to a European destination in March/April (self-funded, one-week programme)
